Project Description: Emico were awarded the contract by Integral Building Services. Construction of The Shard completed in 2011 followed by CAT A and CAT B fit outs to all associated floors. The project was carried over two Phases. The first phase (1A) works were carried out on the following floors 4,5,6 & 12. The second phase (1B) works were carried out on the following floors 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 14, 15, & 16. Following the failure of rubber expansion bellows and subsequent investigations it was identified the need to replace the landlord’s expansion bellows on the chilled water and low temperature hot water primary and secondary systems.
Works were complex and required significant interface with stakeholders of the shard including Shangri-La Hotel, HCA Healthcare, various restaurants, and clients of all stakeholders. Communication with each of these stakeholders was required to prevent any disruption to their day to day function.
Emico set up a welding and fabrication facility on site to build the spool pieces of pipework and flanges to replace the defunct pipework floor by floor. Fabrication and surveys were carried out during the day while the installation of pipwork was carried out at night to deliver the minimum disruption to the function of the building while keeping the program as short as possible. The works to a single floor were undertaken in a single weekend- limiting any disruption.
